Xilisoft Video Converter supports a ton of formats, and we find that very useful, as you can have all your preferred videos on any of your favorite mobile devices. Perhaps the sapphire crystal over the dial will provide a sufficient seal to prevent the watch face from darkening, or at least reduce the rate of oxidization sufficiently to keep it legible between services. The coin and watch case are made of 925 sterling silver, another unusual material in watchmaking due to silver’s tendency to tarnish over time. The coin depicts a heraldic eagle with shield on the watch face and a walking Statue of Liberty on the caseback. The next model in the Corum Heritage Artisans Coin Watches lineup is the silver reference C082/03059, which features an American Silver Eagle one-dollar coin. The cases are rated to 1 ATM / 10m water-resistance, so wearers should take care to avoid any exposure to water beyond a light sprinkle. All three watches feature a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment and a thin 7.60mm case, making them well-suited for dress watch duties. The matching black alligator leather strap completes the attractive black-on-gold vintage aesthetic, and includes a more durable 18ct yellow gold tongue buckle. The hour and minute hands on this watch are thin, baton-shaped, and black lacquered, providing good legibility without obscuring the view of the coin face. Gem-setting in such a soft alloy could prove somewhat precarious, and I would avoid heavy use of the crown to avoid deforming the metal and potentially losing the diamond. The crown is likewise made of 22ct gold and is set with a 0.17 carat diamond. As a result, the case of this Corum Heritage Artisans Coin Watch is a richer hue of yellow than most other gold watches on the market, but it is also significantly softer and more prone to scratching. This grade of gold is 91.6% pure, rather than the more common 18ct grade which uses 75% gold and 25% alloying metals. The gold model is also notable for using 3N or 22ct yellow gold, which is unusual for a watch case. The hour indices are extended from the outer bezel into the gold inner bezel, making this the most legible of the three models. This in turn provided space for the company branding to be etched near 12 o’clock without modifying the coin face itself, omitting the floating logo used on the other models in this year’s Corum Heritage Artisans Coin Watches lineup. This version bears the strongest resemblance to the original from 1964, but with the addition of an inner bezel in matching gold around the coin to increase the dial diameter to a more modern 43mm. This coin depicts a heraldic eagle with shield on the watch face and the head of the Statue of Liberty on the caseback. We’ll start by taking a look at the gold model, reference C082/03167, which features an American Liberty Head Double Eagle 20 dollar gold coin. Three new versions of the Corum Heritage Artisans Coin Watch have been released this year. The first Coin watch combined the brand’s styling with an ultra-thin movement fitted within a sliced-in-two American gold coin, creating a unique dress watch with both exclusivity and patriotic appeal.Īs a naturally patriotic symbol, Corum points out that several American presidents have worn Corum Heritage Artisans Coin Watches, including George Bush Sr, Ronald Reagan, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton, as well as artists such as Andy Warhol. Their early success was defined by gold watches in the Art Nouveau style, such as the Chinese Hat and Admiral models. This year, a new trio of Corum Heritage Artisans Coin Watches have been announced, making use of American coins as well as a much rarer (for the brand) commemorative coin from Israel.Ĭorum were founded in 1955, making them relatively young by Swiss watchmaker standards. The model was a huge success for Corum, who have released numerous versions over the years including the 50th Anniversary Edition we covered previously. Or so the train of thought went back in 1964 for La Chaux-de-Fonds-based maison Corum, when they produced their first Coin watch based on the American $20 Double Eagle. Since both coins and watches are often considered “collectibles,” it makes a certain amount of sense to combine the two and entice aficionados of both hobbies. D'Agostino, a research specialist, and Hopi E. Nachman recently published on this work in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and in Molecular Ecology together with Susan L. It's a dramatic example of convergent evolution, and it came as a surprise to me." "Different genes have mutated to produce nearly identical dark mice in different places," illustrating that "there are different genetic solutions to an evolutionary problem. That, in itself, is an important result, Nachman noted. Coat color differences in mice from the Armendaris formation could not be explained by genetic changes in either the Mc1r gene or the agouti gene, and so far, Nachman said, his team does not know what causes the dark coloration in that mouse population. Surprisingly, it was a different story for the New Mexico mice. Further, Nachman said the findings show "you can have relatively few mutations that have a major effect on phenotype," which suggests "it's not a big step to make a radical change in a phenotype that is essential for the survival of the animal in its environment. That's why it's exciting-we can make the link all the way from genotype to phenotype," Nachman said. "This is a study where we really have all the pieces of the puzzle in one place. This perfect association between the genetics and the coat color makes it almost certain that the dark color in the Pinacate mice is caused by the changes in their Mc1r gene, according to Nachman. Two light mice collected on the dark rocks used the "light spelling" for their Mc1r genes, and the lone dark mouse found on the adjacent light rocks used the "dark" spelling. All 18 dark-colored Pinacate mice shared a common set of 4 single-letter spelling differences in their Mc1r gene compared to the light-colored mice collected nearby. The Pinacate mice showed a perfect match between coat color and spelling of their Mc1r gene. Light and dark rock pocket mice on light granite and dark basalt rocks In addition to sampling the dark mice captured on the basaltic areas, they sampled light mice captured on light rocks just adjacent to the sites. They knew the DNA sequences of the lab mouse versions of these genes, which helped them to find and read the genes from their rock pocket mouse specimens. Nachman's group made an educated guess that genetic differences in either the Mc1r or agouti genes might account for the dark pelage of rock pocket mice living in the volcanic areas. Another, called agouti, controls lighter yellow and reddish pigmentation. One gene, called Mc1r, stimulates production of the black pigment in coat fibers. Some of the genes exert more influence on the color palette than others, which fine-tune the hues and patterns. Scores of different genes control fur pigmentation, and thanks to modern genomic technology, they've all been identified at the DNA sequence level for lab mice. Biologists have worked out in fine detail the genetic and biochemical processes that control mammalian coat color, particularly for the common lab mouse, an evolutionary cousin of rock pocket mice. "But even after more than 50 years of intensive study," Nachman said, "we still don't know which genes are involved." In fact, he added, "there are very few examples where we actually know the genes that underlie an adaptation in nature, and almost no examples for cases of natural selection that are not induced by human disturbances," such as pesticide or heavy metal resistance. Peppered moths make a compelling case study in natural selection. A classic illustration of "survival of the fittest." As the cities reduced the pollution, the tree trunks lightened up, and so did the moths. Eventually, black became the norm for urban peppered moths. Better camouflaged than their light-colored brethren, the dark forms survived and proliferated. In a short time, though, dark variants of the moths sprang up. Coal soot from burgeoning industry gradually blackened tree trunks in urban areas, and left the moths more vulnerable to predators. In pre-industrial England, most peppered moths had mottled grey wings, camouflaging well with the birch trees upon which they rested. The story is reminiscent of the peppered moth lesson from high school biology class. Almost all of the mice collected from the volcanic formations had dark coats-the better to stay concealed from hungry owls, which can pick off mice from contrasting backgrounds even at night. Nachman's group collected pocket mice from two of these black rock islands-the Pinacate formation in southwestern Arizona and the Pedro Armendaris formation of New Mexico. But scattered throughout the southwest are islands of black basaltic rock formed from not-so-ancient lava flows. Most of the mice have light tawny fur, which blends in well with the desert granite substrates they typically inhabit. Nachman, examined the coat colors of rock pocket mice. The group, led by Professor of ecology and evolutionary biology Michael W. You and a few other friends must venture into the Cheyenne Mountain as such, and put a stop to all the occult forces that get in your way if you have any chance of saving Colorado Springs. As you might’ve guessed though, this hope in a bomb is akin to the Covenant’s desire to activate the rings in Halo, and thus could be catastrophic. The DLC promises a lot, with several cults vying for power behind this “Holy Detonation” of an atom bomb. The warring cults have differing opinions on who should be allowed to honor their god, and you’re going to have to muscle your way to the altar.” Whether god, science experiment, or accidental miracle, the Detonation’s energy could power Colorado Springs for hundreds of years, or level it in an instant. In an official blog post from the team, they detailed what fans can expect from the Cult of Holy Detonation DLC:ĭeep within the Cheyenne Mountain military complex, mutant cults worship an ancient deity they call the Holy Detonation-a nuclear explosion held in stasis. You can find the announcement trailer for the DLC below! Today, the team is happy to announce that Wasteland 3 will be getting the Cult of Holy Detonation DLC on October 5, available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms. As Xbox has a partnership with the team at inXile Entertainment, and today hosted their Gamescom 2021 showcase, it only makes sense that the team would have something to show off, and they brought out the big guns. Since its release just less than a year ago, the title has received massive praise both critically and commercially, being absolutely adored by fans around the world. Wasteland 3 has been considered by many as a glorious return for the Wasteland series, and isometric RPGs in general. For example, agents typically handle a lot more customers, which limits their ability to provide personalized Reduced-service brokers offer many of the same services as a traditional agent, but usually with a significant reduction in hands-on support. In fact, for theĪmount you’d spend on a reduced-service broker, you can often get a full-service agent for not much more money. They’re overpriced relative to the lack of benefits you’ll generally receive, even if the low rates look good on paper. We don’t think the flat-fee brokers in the reduced-service tier are a good option for most people. we recommend working with a brand like Clever.įlat-fee brokers that offer reduced service But if you have a complicated situation - or you just prefer the familiar experience of working with a traditional realtor Houwzer's customer service model works out fine for many sellers, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with it. Rather, someone else on the Houwzer team may assist with items like showings, negotiations, or closing. You’ll still get all the same services with Houwzer as you would with a traditional realtor, they just might not all beĭelivered by your assigned agent. Houwzer uses a team-based approach, so your agent won’t be as directly involved with your sale as a traditional realtor. But sellers who prefer the hands-on service of a traditional agent may get less personalized support Houwzer is one of the only flat-fee brokerages to offer full service, which makes it a better option than reduced-service brands like Help-U-Sell and Homie. Top flat-fee real estate companies that offer full service Keep reading: Top flat-fee brokers for most sellers | Who should use a flat rate realtor? | Reduced and limited You can usually find a better deal with one of the discount brands we recommend in our guide to the best low commission brokers.Ĭompanies that offer reduced or limited service are only worth considering if you’re an extremely experienced seller and comfortable handling more (or even most) of the sale yourself. With these companies, you’ll typically encounter big service trade-offs, less hands-on support, and your experience may feel a lot more DIY. Most sellers should avoid working with the flat-rate brands we’ve classified as reduced or limited service. Top companies like Clever Real Estate and Houwzer can save you big bucks without the service trade-offs you’ll encounter with many of their competitors. If you’re looking to work with a flat-fee agent, we usually recommend a full-service brand that offers a similar experience to working with a traditional realtor. A flat-fee real estate broker is a company that will sell your house for a fixed dollar amount instead of the typical 2.5-3% listing fee. Some of these games are about individual survival, like Rust, but there are also games like Oxygen Not Included, which tasks you with controlling an entire colony of people. Steam’s definition of a “survival” game is pretty broad here - the event includes Apex Legends in its popular titles list, for example - but mostly seems focused around crafting games with hunger and thirst meters. Or maybe you feel as though you’ve seen everything the game has to offer you for now and want to try something a little different. I was often the victim of display bugs and crashes, and it was getting slower and slower as time passed. Suddenly, I had access to the Linux shell, a tool offering many ways to automate everything I didn’t want to do again and again.īut Ubuntu wasn’t without drawbacks. Once upon a time, in the magical land of Software development, there was a young developer, your humble servant, discovering Linux for the first time. This can save a lot of cognitive energy as well as deliver a pleasant user experience. You can use tools that fit nicely with each other, you can customize everything depending on your own needs, and the biggest of all, you can control your entire development environment with your keyboard. I only recommend rolling release distros if you have a strong and constant Internet connection and you don't mind doing some troubleshooting.Building a development environment with the shell as a keystone offers multiple benefits. If you don't mind a rolling release distro (which has frequent "rolling" updates but you get newer software) you can go with Artix Linux or Void Linux. Linux Mint Debian Edition is also good if you want an out-of-the-box distro (it has systemd tho). I like stable distros that don't update too much since I have shitty Internet and my desktop computer is old and I don't have a wired connection in my room (I use apt-offline to get packages and updates from my laptop to my desktop). MX Linux is a good choice but if you want to try a more minimalist distro (but still prefer stable releases with slow updates) try Debian or Devuan (which is systemd-free). At least it isn't as worse as Ubuntu though (it's a fine distro if you don't mind systemd and frequent updates, since it has newer features and doesn't have the retardedness of Ubuntu like Snapd, and it has respins with other DEs). Not all, depends on what is pre-packaged in the distribution.Ĭlick to expand.I wouldn't touch Fedora, since it's backed by RedHat which has been pushing a lot of retarded bloat that's been ruining Linux (like systemd) on top of having a fast release cycle. You can learn more about desktop environments on this page: These are much lighter that DEs and different window manager have different features (some WMs are traditional stacking WMs with floating windows that overlap and can be dragged with a mouse, others are tiling WMs that tile windows and divide the screen space designed for mouseless use with keyboard navigation). For example you can install and use Openbox on its own, as well as Fluxbox, Window Maker, twm, i3, IceWM, FVWM, etc. There are also window managers you can install standalone without any extra applications and are "agnostic" when it comes to desktop evironments. Desktop environments and applications are also designed around a toolkit (like GTK for GNOME, Cinnamon, MATE and XFCE and Qt for KDE and Qt). Then there are the minimalist "build-it-yourself" distros (like Debian/Devuan, Arch/Artix Linux, Void Linux, Gentoo, LFS, etc.) that only installs the base operating system (the kernel, coreutils, bash shell, and some drivers for networking) with a command-line only, and the user must install any additional packages, libraries and dependencies (including the graphic user interface, etc.) via the package manager after installation of the system.Īnother note on desktop environments is that desktop environments are suites of applications, that include a window manager (KDE has KWin,GNOME has Mutter, XFCE has Xfwm and LXQt uses Openbox) as well as other applications that work together (namely the file manager, image viewer, text editor, settings manager, etc.). Knoppix which is a live DVD distro also comes with a lot of stuff installed. Slackware is notorious for coming with a lot of bloat (since a full installation of Slackware has all dependencies and libraries already installed) and the install CD has options for different DEs and WMs. LXQt is the lightest popular desktop environment rn. Cinnamon, MATE and XFCE are in the middleweight range. GNOME and KDE are the more heavyweight ones and will take up a lot of RAM on your PC. The more popular distros (Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, Manjaro, OpenSuSE, etc.) already have a desktop environment along with extra pre-installed applications (web browsers, email client, GIMP, etc.) and drivers, since they're meant to work out-of-the-box with very little configuration or additional packages to install for the end user.Īnd it also depends on the desktop environment that comes pre-installed. Click to expand. Not all, depends on what is pre-packaged in the distribution. Mindmapping features would be amazing too. In the calendar the "Also available: xx Tasks" would be nice if if would separate in tasks which are due tomorrow, this week, this month, and later. One thing I am missing is the possibility to set project, priority and task colors. The task list is synced to the phone so I can have a widget with reminders. In the Chaos Box I throw in all the tasks which accumulate and at the same time I can manage my many work projects in an efficient way. The desktop software convinced me that this is the solution to my problems. I tested the Chaos Control mobile app and then downloaded the PC software which both have free trials. These moments of poetry, play, and contemplation serve to break up the narrative of brutality and violence and remind you that there is still beauty in the world, both inner and outer. You sit quietly and observe nature, composing a simple poem which Jin recites aloud. There are also haiku spots all over the island, generally surrounded by a beautiful sky, waterfalls, forests, mountains, or the sea. You can also pet some of these foxes, who dance and yelp with delight as you touch them. These gentle beings usually sit beneath red-leafed trees whose branches glow and pulse with swarms of fireflies as you follow the foxes to their small shrines, you are gradually gifted with special charms which you can equip for strength buffs, stealth advantages, and added health. Scaling these shrines highlights the effortless fun of Ghost of Tsushima’s leaping and climbing system. Additionally, you seek out shrines, which are often atop treacherous mountains. Instead of a typical map system, you are guided to quest points and other locations by following the wind: blowing leaves and white gusts of air lead you to your destination golden birds sing and chirp, leading you to hot springs where you sit, soak, and contemplate your family, friends, and the harsh reality of war (sitting in these springs also increases your maximum health). The mechanics and activities in this game are also quite unique. Most of the time, it felt more like I was watching a film or a miniseries than playing a video game. It doesn’t feel like a computer-generated character died-it feels real, the weight of each loss is palpable. And for that matter, whenever anyone perishes in this game, you feel it. I deeply cared for all of the characters, not only those in the main cast, but even side characters who appear only once or twice. But amid all of this human suffering, there are glimmers of selflessness and compassion. Many quests and side quests that set you up to rescue someone, more often than not, end in death. Much of this game, in terms of the human stories and interactions, is violent and bleak it demonstrates the true brutality of war. There are several intriguing and endearing characters who gradually populate your list of allies, and the voice acting, as well as the writing, is utterly captivating from start to finish. She recruits Jin to help her rescue her brother, Taka, who was also taken captive by the Mongol army.Īnd this is just where the story begins. Yuna is a thief who we later learn had a severely traumatic upbringing. Jin is wounded and left for dead on the beach, but a woman named Yuna saves his life and helps him recover. Khan is a ferocious leader, but for all his ruthlessness, he is patient, persuasive, and thoughtful, making him quite a compelling character. Shimura is taken captive by the game’s primary villain, Khotun Khan. The Mongol army decimates the samurai, leaving only Jin and his uncle, Lord Shimura, alive. The game opens with a brutal massacre on Komoda Beach. The story takes place during the first Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274, which occurs on the island of Tsushima. The game, which is an open world action-adventure RPG, follows the life of Jin Sakai, a samurai from the 13 th century.
